When did you start preparing your audition for Banana Ball and what was your reaction when you were drafted to the Firefighters?
JR: I began my preparation for my audition the moment I found out, about 6-7 weeks before the tryout. I talked with Jesse and Berry and immediately set out to get my body and arm back in shape. The singing, I knew, would go wonderfully as that’s been my career for some 15+ years full-time, but being able to throw at a level that would allow me to play Banana Ball required some SERIOUS work. I knew I could do it, I just needed to prioritize it, and am SO glad I did. Now that I’m drafted to the Firefighters, I’m doubling down and REALLY getting back in shape for next year.
I was overjoyed to be drafted to the Firefighters! In fact, in my singing career I’ve been involved with several productions and award-ceremonies including the Congressional Medal of Honor ceremony where I’ve sung to honor first responders and those who serve our country. I LOVE what the Firefighters stand for and so this is very “on brand” for me. Plus fire and operatic vocal fireworks? A union made in heaven!
What stadium are you most looking forward to playing at this upcoming 2027 season?
JR: There are several and for different reasons. I currently live in Buffalo, NY and so I am VERY excited to play at Sahlen’s Field next summer and be able to play in front of so much of my family, friends, and for the people who HELPED me get back into shape this fall. Then, I’m extremely excited to play at Yankee Stadium on my BIRTHDAY (May 29)… as it’s every ball playing kid’s dream to play there, I think. I’m also excited about Disney, Uniqlo Field, Nationals Park and several others :).
How long have you been playing baseball for?
JR: I’ve been playing since I was 7 years old, and took a long hiatus from the age of 19-30 because of my operatic career. I picked it back up here in Buffalo for a few years so I’d say I’ve played ball for 16 years, but loved it for 29 years. Now that I’m 36 years old I’m overjoyed to bring my story full circle!
Since you were on America’s Got Talent, do you have a memory that you would you like to share from that?
JR: That was a beautiful and surreal experience. One memory that I hold dear was from the one and only Simon Cowell: After saying (and I kid you not and you can fact check the videos online) that, “This was, I believe, the best act of the series so far” he approached us on stage during a commercial break and thanked each of us for, “Elevating their television program” and by being “outstanding professionals raising the bar”… I was FLOORED by that. I am honored to continue that work on the ballfield and hope I can positively impact people with opera THIS way, too.
Do you support any organizations or charities?
JR: One in particular I’d like to shout out is FAR therapeutic arts and recreation. I have had the great pleasure of being a part of their Sing Out for Kids fundraiser in Detroit, Michigan (my hometown before moving to Buffalo) many times over the past 20 years, and what their organization stands for is just so wonderful (supporting those with disabilities through music and dance).
How do you spread the love?
JR: My whole… purpose in life is to add value and joy to those I am around… from the beginning I knew that that was my “calling card”. Now that I’m being given yet another platform to do it, I’m going to be smiling, laughing, and sharing joy left and
